Sunflower Hill Garden

Gardening

Sunflower Hill Garden provides educational/vocational services to special needs individuals and donates the produce to disadvantaged people. The garden serves local special needs individuals in high school, adult transition schools, and adult day programs. The produce goes to these people, as well as local food banks to help low income families. The garden is at Hagemann Ranch, located at 455 Olivina Avenue in Livermore.

Open Heart Kitchen

Soup Kitchen

Founded in 1995 by an inter-faith effort, Open Heart Kitchen’s mission is to provide nutritious meals free of charge or qualification to the needy people of the Tri-Valley area.  Open Heart Kitchen offers the only free hot meal service of its kind in the area.  Open Heart Kitchen is a 501(C) (3) non-profit agency. Vegan Sandwich

This church in San Francisco offers a variety of volunteering opportunities. Their main community service, however, is reaching out to the homeless. Volunteer any day of the week to help make sandwiches and serve meals to the hungry.

Pleasanton Public Library

Library

The Pleasanton library offers volunteering opportunities through their Friends of the Pleasanton Library program. Volunteers are needed to shelve and mend books, and serve as docents for their genealogy collection. Contact: Nancy Bering (925) 462-4368

Pleasanton Reads Project

Reading Together

Pleasanton Reads depends on volunteer tutors to provide one-on-one instruction in both basic literacy and English as a second language to residents over 18 who are struggling with reading and writing.  Library staff train adult volunteers and then pair them with a student.  Students and tutors usually meet once per week for 1-2 hours at a mutually convenient time and place. Tutoring and all necessary materials are free of charge.

Books

You can volunteer with Friends of the Livermore Library at the bookstore in the Civic Center branch. The bookstore is dependent on volunteers to run and supports the library’s effort in serving the local community.

Livermore Public Library Tutors

Math Notebook and Calculator

The Livermore library also has a volunteer based literacy program for those who wish to make a long term commitment. The literacy program is used to provide adults with tutors to help them improve their basic reading and writing skills. No previous tutoring experience is necessary, and the library will provide year-round training to all tutors.

Living Arroyos

River

​Living Arroyos works to improve the streams and its habitats in the Livermore-Amador Valley. They work to better the quality of drinking water, prevent flooding, and restore our native ecosystems. Volunteers are needed every 1st and 3rd Saturday (October-April) to help with duties such as planting and weeding. Tools, water, and snacks are provided!
